AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE

WHO ARE YOU SERVING?

“….but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15. How many of us have this scripture hanging up in our homes somewhere?

The question is how’s your walk comparing with your talk….or the scripture on your wall? Serving the Lord implies that HE IS LORD. To simplify: He is the boss….we are not. That means that to truly serve the Lord, His ways must be our ways. We adapt to him, He doesn’t adapt to us. We follow Him – we don’t go our own way and then ask for His blessing. If we do that, we have become our own boss and fired the Lord our God. He is not just our manager – He is our Lord and Savior!

Many times we excitedly make our plans of how we want to serve God, and then ask for God’s blessing upon them - only to find out He wasn’t interested in what you wanted to do. He wanted you to join Him in what He was already doing! Sometimes we even make plans completely contrary to God’s will – or even to his very plain written word – and we expect God to bless it because of the free grace he offers us.

Have we forgotten that there are conditions to His blessings? Over and over the word says I will bless you and your children IF you do my will. For example:

Deut 26:16-19

16 The LORD your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. 17 You have declared this day that the LORD is your God and that you will walk in his ways, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws, and that you will obey him. 18 And the LORD has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. 19 He has declared that he will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations he has made and that you will be a people holy to the LORD your God, as he promised.
(from New International Version)

What about those vows (promises) we have made to the Lord our God concerning our lives, our children, our marriages? Have we considered this scripture:

Deut 23:21-23

21 If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the LORD your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin. 22 But if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty. 23 Whatever your lips utter you must be sure to do, because you made your vow freely to the LORD your God with your own mouth.
(from New International Version)

And before we proclaim that is “Old Testament”, consider this scripture:

2 Tim 3:15-17

15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
(from New International Version)

Remember, these words were written by Paul BEFORE the New Testament was ever put to paper. These people knew the Holy Scriptures from infancy – the OLD TESTAMENT. These words still “count” – or do you wish to throw away the Ten Commandments as well?

So……who is it all about in your life? Me….me……me! Or Him…Him……Him?
